Best Low-Priced Laptops – 2016

Join us in finding out what the best low-priced laptops are right now. While browsing for a new laptop, you’ll most likely run into a plethora of available choices. We’ll focus more on simplifying the choosing process.

These are not high-end machines that can run design programs or modern 3D games. If you’re looking for such devices, visit our best laptops for graphic design guide.

Thinking about buying a budget laptop? You might believe that you’ll have to compromise. The truth is, that’s not the case anymore. Depending on what you’re looking for in a laptop, you might end up with the perfect pick. And you’ll notice that you can do this without spending too much.

People think “you get what you pay for”, or getting the “best bang for your buck.”. This guide will focus on the later, on getting the best laptop that can fit into your budget.

Buying in the cheap isn’t a wrong decision. It doesn’t matter if your laptop doesn’t come with the latest bells and whistles. If you’re okay with the level of performance a budget laptop can offer, then you’re golden. It’s true. If you want a more reliable system, then you’ll have to increase your available budget. But if you’re not looking a laptop that should last for years, this guide should help a bit.

Now you’ll just have to understand our picking process. We were thinking about the best low-priced laptops. So we made a point of choosing notebooks that are under $500. So, all laptops that you’ll find on the lower end of the page will cost even less than that. The laptop types we ran into while applying this filtering were diverse. Our guide will run through a few Chromebooks, convertibles, and general purpose notebooks.

Our process involved reading up on user reviews. A lot of them. Getting to know what most of them bought. Calculating a mean average and quantifying the general impression about the model. Our results are thus from filtering through a few thousand reviews. Getting the general vibe for each laptop model and arranging them by customer feel.

While it’s a bit too much to ask for 8GB of ram or a quad-core processor. A solid state drive installed might even be over-budget. We managed to find a few models that stand out from the crowd.

Even finding a laptop with a full HD screen might seem like a long-shot. But if you’re quite attentive to details and do your research, you should be able to find a few gems.

CPU

Now, about internal hardware. It would be great if you could get a high-end machine for under $500. But that’s not the case. But, you should be able to get a more than a suitable model in this price range. The CPU can be an ATOM or Celeron from Intel. A few laptop models even carry the Core i5 processor. Quite an impressive feat for this market sector.

RAM

You’ll get about 4GB on average. The low-point is 2GB, but you shouldn’t even bother with such a low amount. Your aim is 4GB or higher. If you can get a notebook with 8GB or even 6GB, then that’s great.

Storage

Inexpensive systems come with regular hard drives. These are okay for most tasks and provide enough storage space. The best low-priced laptops include a few systems that come with SSDs. They’re not capacitive SSDs, mind you. But they do offer a fast computing experience.

Budget laptops also include conventional connectivity options. USB 2.0 ports, with some carrying even a USB 3.0 port. There’s also the standard SD card slot, VGA and with a bit of luck, even an HDMI port.

Let’s clarify a few notions before moving on to the models themselves.

What are Chromebooks and Hybrids?

Chromebooks are light notebooks that run Google’s Chrome OS. They focus more on the web experience. So you need to make sure you have an active internet connection to use them. Their storage capacity is small. But they all come bundled with at least 100GB of free cloud storage, which makes up for this.

Hybrids are a mixture of laptop and tablet. These convertible systems allow you to switch between laptop and tablet modes. They do this by either removing the keyboard-dock or by folding the keyboard away.

So, let’s find the best low-priced laptops in 2016
